WeHo Women’s History Month kicks off tonight with “Male Callâ€

West Hollywood, California (March 8, 2010) – The City of West Hollywood continues to honor the achievements of women of the past and present for Women’s History Month throughout March.
The month kicks off with a special benefit stage presentation called “Male Call – Actors Read the Words of Great Women.”
The month-long recognition will include photo and banner exhibits, 15th Annual Women in Leadership Awards and the Women’s Leadership Conference.
In addition, a “Living the Legacy†exhibit of posters, photographs, and biographies of historical and contemporary notable women will be on display through the end of March at West Hollywood City Hall, 8300 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood.
The month kicks off with a special benefit stage presentation called “Male Call – Actors Read the Words of Great Women.”
Several popular actors including Bruce Vilanch, Ken Page, James Morrison and Peter Paige will headline “Male Call – Actors Read the Words of Great Women,” a benefit in support of the Downtown Women’s Center on Monday, March 8, 2010 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at The Coast Playhouse, 8325 Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood.
The event, sponsored by the City of West Hollywood’s Women’s Advisory Board, is a benefit for the Downtown Women’s Center. The Downtown Women’s Center’s mission is to provide supportive housing and a safe and healthy community fostering dignity, respect, and personal stability, and to advocate ending homelessness for women.

A $25 suggested donation to the benefit event includes the performance and dessert reception.

All month a display of banners that commemorate famous American women, civil rights leaders and women’s rights activists will hang on light poles along Santa Monica Boulevard between La Cienega Boulevard and Crescent Heights Boulevard.
Famous women to be displayed on the banners include Susan B. Anthony; Clara Barton; Hillary Rodam Clinton; Bessie Coleman; Amelia Earhart; Dolores Huerta; Barbara Jordan; Mother Jones; Coretta Scott King; Mary McLeod Bethune; Rosa Parks; Eleanor Roosevelt; Margaret Sanger; Elizabeth Stanton; Gloria Steinem; Sojourner Truth; Harriet Tubman; Ida B. Wells and more.
This year two new banners have been added featuring Marian Wright Edelman and Gail Abarbanel.
The 15th Annual Women in Leadership Awards and Reception will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 at The London West Hollywood, 1020 N. San Vicente Boulevard.

The Women in Leadership Awards is a annual awards ceremony which pays tribute to the achievements and contributions of local women.
This year’s honorees include Janice Feldman, President and Founder, Janus et Cie; Mina Kedar, PhD, Director of Continuing Services, Downtown Women’s Center; Helyne Meshar, Meshar and Associates; Rae Mitchell, longtime community activist and volunteer; and Vivian Sauer, LCSW, Associate Executive Director, Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles.
Cost is $15 per person. Proceeds from the event will benefit the West Hollywood Youth Scholarship Program, one of the nation’s first municipal-funded scholarships.
Women’s History Month celebrations in West Hollywood will continue through April with the Fourth Annual West Hollywood Women’s Leadership Conference: Fierce & Fabulous! which will focus on leadership opportunities for women, leadership skills development and personal development.
This year’s Fourth Annual West Hollywood Women’s Leadership Conference: Fierce & Fabulous will take place on Saturday, April 10, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Plummer Park, 7377 Santa Monica Boulevard. A $25 advance registration fee is required.
There will be a free community kick-off for the Conference on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the House of Blues, 8430 Sunset Boulevard featuring a comedy night of top women comedians.
