“Tru Loved” Story Of A Gay-Straight Alliance

Film tells the Gay-Straight Allliance story.

The Gay-Straight Alliance Network, which helps students on high and middle school campuses form Gay-Straight Alliance Clubs to provide “a safe place for students to meet, support each other, talk about issues related to sexual orientation, and work to end homophobia,” has partnered with the ACLU, Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians and Gays, and the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center to promote a movie dealing with “gay” youth issues.

“Wanna be an extra in this film?” asked the July “GSA Network News.” Extras were needed, announced the “News” for the film, Tru Loved, portions of which were being shot at Agoura High School in Agoura Hills from July 12-14. High school-aged students were asked to come dressed “in typical high school student clothing,” and a special plea was made for football players “dressed in workout outfits.”

“Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to be part of a film that will help tell the GSA story!” said the “News.”

The “GSA story” in the film is the story of 16-year old Tru, who “is uprooted by her lesbian moms from her comfortable gay-friendly home in San Francisco and moved to a conservative, suburban community in Southern California,” says the movie’s web site. “Tru’s only friend is a closeted football player, and even that friendship is jeopardized when she starts the school’s first Gay-Straight Alliance.”

But there’s more. According to the web site, AfterElton.com, the film’s “as-yet bare-bones website promises a ‘gay wedding at the climax of the film,’ lots of hot football players, ‘sexy lesbian moms who bust all the stereotypes, and a terrific, all-star cast of richly drawn characters.’” A visit to the Tru Love web site revealed none of these things – but it provided a link to the AfterElton story.

The film, however, will not have any sexual scenes, its writer and director Stewart Wade told the June 27 Inland Valley Daily Bulletin – except a “kind of a sad farewell kiss” between two men. Yet, Claremont High School in June refused to grant a permit to allow filming of the movie on its campus, citing scheduling problems and legal concerns that the school district could be liable if a student gets hurt or is involved “in inappropriate activities (e.g., alcohol, drugs, sexual conduct), etc.” Some Claremont community members, however, suggested that these were not the real motives behind denying the permit.

The film’s “all-star cast” includes The 40-Year Old Virgin co-star Jane Lynch, who will play Tru’s lesbian teacher, and openly homosexual comedian Bruce Vilanch. Director Stewart Wade directed Film and Music Entertainment’s homosexual-themed film, Coffee Date, about a man “who has a problem … he’s straight.”

Filming of Tru Loved was scheduled to finish Aug. 2.
