Tickets are now on sale for the 16th Annual Gypsy of the Year Competition benefiting Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.The annual competition will be held Dec. 6 (4:30 PM) and 7 (2 PM) at the Neil Simon Theatre and follows six weeks of intensive fundraising by various shows on and off Broadway as well as touring productions throughout the country. It’s a chance to celebrate the Broadway gypsies while raising funds for the worthy organization.
Bruce Vilanch, currently on Broadway as Edna Turnblad in Hairspray, will host this year’s event.
Awards are presented in two categories: for best skit and for most money raised for BC/EFA. Last season, the competition raised a record-breaking $3,359,000. Best skit honors went to Aida with Urinetown as first runner-up. The Boy From Oz — starring Hugh Jackman — raised the most money for BC/EFA, $633,000, an all-time high for one show. Other front-runners: Hairspray, $303,024; Phantom, $155,964; and Gypsy, $147,366.
