Mr Gay Israel has been crowned as the overall winner of the International Mr Gay Competition 2007, held in Palm Springs.

Nathan Shaked, holder of a law degree and owner of a chain of fitness clubs, dethrowned last year’s winner, Jesse Bashem of the US.

Mr Gay Israel will be awarded with a modelling contract, a Caribbean cruise and a trip to Puerto Vallarta.

Friday night’s event, hosted by American comedian Bruce Vilanch, featured contestants from all over the world including: Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lichtenstein, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Sweden, Vatican City and Mexico.

Second place went to American Grant Ermis, and third went to the Netherlands’ Joep Mesman.

Mr Gay Ireland Keith Kearney, a carpenter, specialising in restorations and renovation, competed but did not place.

Producer of the event Don Spradlin said: “Competitions such as these have been popular in Europe for years.”

“The winner will serve as a spokesman to raise the visibility of gay men, confront homophobia, and create a positive role model in his travels around the world.”
