UnsungMusicalsCo. (UMC) will continue its 2014 developmental reading series July 24 at The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center with a presentation of I Had a Ball in the Bruno Walter Auditorium.

The 2:30 PM reading will star Emmy Award winner Bruce Vilanch (Hairspray, “Hollywood Squares”) — in the role originated by comedian Buddy Hackett — and Natalie Venetia Belcon (Matilda, Avenue Q). Ben West directs. Additional casting will be announced at a later time.

I Had a Ball, the 1964 Coney Island musical comedy, has a book by Tony Award winner Jerome Chodorov and a score by Stan Freeman and Jack Lawrence. The score has been newly arranged by musical director Fran Minarik.

I Had a Ball is described as “a vibrant, colorful confection following the delightfully eccentric denizens of Coney Island and the feisty fortune-teller who singlehandedly sets off a series of raucous romantic entanglements. Sparks fly, love blossoms, and hilarious hijinks ensue in this bright and brassy entertainment!”

The Bruno Walter Auditorium of The New York Public Library for the Performing Arts is located at 111 Amsterdam Avenue, between 64th and 65th Streets. Admission is free, and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information visit www.UnsungMusicals.org.

Bruce Vilanch‘s sparks will bring laughs to the Eureka Theatre with delightful, tuneful and captivating music. And of course, the Talented Show Stopper Vilanch will probably give out gang buster ditties. And we are talking high quality here. Believe in me – it will be unbridled Joy.

You can expect double entendres and many hearty chuckles and guffaws along with raucous, funny romps. And as he always has been – he will will be bouncy and spirited. Take my word for it.

I hear the show is sleek with fast-paced yeas and bravos. A dazzling show like this is Dream Land. San Francisco Plays the Eureka Palace (42nd St. Moon.) He will make the audience snicker, as you break into belly laughs – and then whammo! Yep – Vilanch struts his stuff.

This is a Must-See! Romantic Sparks light up the stage. The show continues laughs along with romance and charm. It all builds to the final Curtain.

We’re told that the Direction is awesome. It’s emotionally Exhilarating with gorgeous girls and guys. Thats what we need – a big, old-fashioned musical.

An electrifying story of ambition and survival, Platinum stars Donna Bullock (Ragtime, City of Angels, A Class Act) as Lila Halliday, a dazzling Hollywood legend trying to make a comeback in the explosive music industry of the 1970s. Determined to reignite her career, she turns to rock star Dan Riley and finds herself falling for him as they both fight to stay in the game.

Written by Emmy Award winner Bruce Vilanch (Hairspray, “Hollywood Squares”) and Tony Award nominees Will Holt and Gary William Friedman (The Me Nobody Knows), this new version features revisions and direction by Ben West (How Now, Dow Jones). The musical is choreographed by Rommy Sandhu (How Now, Dow Jones, Mary Poppins) with musical arrangements by Mr. Friedman (“The Electric Company”), musical direction by Fran Minarik (Sessions, The J.A.P. Show), costume design by Janine Marie McCabe (Waiting for the Moon) and lighting design by Joe Hodge (Perfect Crime).

The original Broadway production opened November 12, 1978 at the Mark Hellinger Theatre starring Alexis Smith under the direction of Joe Layton. The musical played 33 performances and received two Tony nominations for Smith and co-star Richard Cox.
